Two swimmer brothers from Brgy. Tambak, Pagbilao, Quezon, received the “Gov. Suarez Medal of excellence” after collecting a total of 14 medals (8 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal) at the 2012 POC-PSC Philippine National Games held in Dumaguete City last May 23 to July 3.
Six gold medals were collected by Franz G. Marquez in the following categories:
1500 Freestyle, 400 meter Freestyle, 400 meter Individual Medley, 200 meter Freestyle,200 meter Individual Medley and 100 meter Butterfly. He also received one silver medal from the 50 meter Breaststroke category.
The younger Marquez, Francis Alvin, obtained two gold medals in the 200 meter Breaststroke and 100 meter Butterfly categories. While 4 silvers were earned from the categories of 1500 meter Freestyle, 400 meter Individual Medley, 400 meter Freestyle and 200 meter Individual Medley. He also acquired a bronze in the 50 meter Freestyle category.
Both brothers hold fastest time records under their belts. In the 400 meter Individual Medley, Franz has the record time of 4:45:25 in the SEA Age Group Swimming Contest held in Indonesia, October of last year. In the National Youth Test qualifying games in Makati of last year, Francis Alvin has the record time of 18:16:39 for the 1500 meter Freestyle.
Franz and Francis Alvin started their swimming careers at the tender age of 8, and everything else went on from there. Currently, the Marquez brothers are members of the Banahaw Swimming Club and are under the care of Philippine Swimming incorporated.
According to Quezon Governor David “Jayjay” Suarez, it was a big honor that the Marquez brothers brought upon Quezon, that is why he deemed it fit to recognize their talents and award them. (Quezon PIO)
